The village has a good range of small shops cafes and pubs serving food and just 17 miles away lies the historic cathedral city of Durham whilst cosmopolitan Newcastle with its excellent shopping great architecture and lively nightlife is only 24 miles' drive. The Beamish Living History Museum Barnard Castle and Killhope Lead Mining Museum are among the fascinating visitor attractions nearby. Pub and shop within 300 yards.

Hadrian's Wall with its Roman forts and the cathedral city of Durham are within 30 miles. Stanhope offers a selection of shops and a good visitors' centre (4 miles) and there is a country pub 1½ miles away.

Pony trekking is available in nearby Hamsterley Forest and a nostalgic steam train ride on the Weardale Railway offers an ideal way to enjoy the local landscape (in season). The historic city of Durham only 17 miles away is well worth visiting for its Norman castle magnificent cathedral and river boat trips whilst in happy contrast cosmopolitan Newcastle for excellent shopping and fascinating architecture is a 24 mile drive.
